Things to Do in Turriff while we are hard at work
Turriff, from the Gaelic ‘Torraibh’, means ‘place of round hills’. It lies on the river Deveron. It is often referred to as ‘Turra’, a name closer to the original Gaelic pronunciation. It has a great history, being the home of some of the first battles in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in the seventeenth century. Also, in the Middle Ages, the Knights Templar had a base here.
Fyvie Castle is located in the village of Fyvie, very near Turriff. It’s a fantastic castle. Beware though – some say it’s haunted. If you want an aerial view of it, check out the Virgin Balloon flights. This will give you a fantastic view of the beautiful Scottish countryside, providing you don’t mind heights!
Delgatie Castle is also worth a visit. Mary Queen of Scots stayed there, and her bedchambers are on show. There are many great walks on the grounds, and it has a homely tearoom that has won the Scottish baking award more than once. Within the grounds of the castle is a four acre loch where you can go fly fishing for trout either on boat or on the bank. There’s also a short walk through woodland and forestry.
